Dear Child Scholars Donor,
Dr. Okenye took the pen from my hands last month, and guess who was the happiest for it? LOL! For once, I thought he could just have it for this month and the next, while I take my much-needed leave; sipping juice by the seaside in Seychelles.
Anyway, back to regular programming! Child Scholars has had its hands full, and my mission this month is to give you the full details of what has been happening across the initiatives you so generously support.
Veritas Academy:
In June, we mentioned that we had to start an emergency flooring project at Veritas Academy after floodwater significantly weakened parts of the school’s fence, thereby threatening the safety of everyone within the premises.
Construction is still ongoing, with most of the flooring now completed. The hired craftsmen are also actively working on replacing the old scaffolding that held the water tank for storage.
We are also building additional conveniences for the kindergarten class. As the number of children has increased, we have to make provision for their comfort and safety.
It is encouraging to see the school gradually taking shape again, and we remain grateful for the resources that have made this work possible.
The Philippines:
Kailana’s latest update from the Philippines is one of careful planning and sustainability.
For the remainder of 2026, the project will focus on supporting the students already enrolled rather than taking on new students, allowing the team to plan responsibly for next year’s budget.
There is already some good news: tuition for all the elementary students has been fully paid for the 2026 – 2027 school year. This means that, for the rest of the year, support will
primarily go towards:
- Transportation to and from school for two elementary students;
- Transportation support for one college student;
- Monthly dormitory and food expenses for the college students; and
- Small bonuses for staff members at the elementary school in Southern Leyte, whose wages remain small.
It is a reminder that supporting a child is not always just about paying tuition. It could mean making sure that a child can actually get to school, has somewhere safe to live, and has food to eat while pursuing an education.
Kenya:
We could not be prouder of the work being done in Kenya. Dr. Sara and Dr. Macahan have helped document an encouraging success story at Ngala School for the Deaf in Nakuru.
220 learners are currently enrolled at Ngala, and the school has recorded 100% learner retention in 2026. Child Scholars contributed partial tuition scholarships for 25 students in Term 1, helping reduce the financial burden on families and, importantly, keeping children in school. But the need remains significant. Ngala collects only about 60% of billed tuition, leaving an estimated annual funding gap of approximately KES 4.6 million.
During Term 2, Child Scholars also stepped in when the school faced difficulty paying the salaries of its 12 essential non-teaching staff. Our donation helped clear outstanding July salaries and allowed the school to continue its essential operations without compromising food supplies already purchased for the students.
And there are other encouraging developments. Ngala has received 10 double-decker beds, a mobile science laboratory, and continues to expand its agriculture and poultry programs. A water infrastructure project is also underway, including an overhead storage tank and solar-powered pump.
There is still much to do, but every intervention is helping Ngala remain a place where children with hearing impairments can learn, grow, and stay in school. Thank you for making all of this possible.
Nidus Aquilae Hospital:
At Nidus Aquilae Hospital, we have not relented in ensuring that our primary healthcare services continue to meet the needs of the communities we serve. As part of these efforts, we are seeking the services of a Community Engagement Officer who will serve as the face of the hospital while also leading the hospital’s brand and marketing strategy.
This is another step towards ensuring that the communities we serve not only have access to healthcare, but also know where and how to access it.
