Dear Child Scholars Donor,
When we took a retrospective look at where we started this journey and realized where we are today, it made us pause and say, “Wow, look at what God has done!”
As we celebrate the progress we have made across our various initiatives, we know that none of this happens in isolation. Every child who has benefited from a Child Scholars intervention has enjoyed tremendous grace because people like you have continued to give.
Your consistent giving has allowed us to meet needs when they arise, return to needs that have been waiting for attention, and keep investing in the children even when the road has not always been simple.
This month, I want to take you into Veritas Academy, where several things that have been pending for quite some time finally began to take shape.
Finally, We Could Get to These Projects at Veritas
It is the beginning of a new calendar year for schools in Nigeria. And since we had already started the flooring project at Veritas Academy, we decided to use the holiday period to execute some other important and pending projects.
There were a few factors that led to leaving these projects pending for this long, so let me give you a bit of background.
For some years, our pupils have had to make do and practically manage the scanty amenities within the school environs and in their classrooms. And I mean this in a very literal sense.
From managing just two toilets, to learning in classrooms with no electricity but really limited classroom amenities; the children and teachers have had to work with what was available.
Even the few textbooks they used during learning sessions had to be moved from place to place because when left in the classrooms, they were stolen. These break-ins happened in the middle of the night.
Prior to this, Child Scholars had invested in a lot of textbooks, age-appropriate teaching materials and aids, and computers. Unfortunately, they were all stolen. In a recent email exchange with an education consultant, Kaylee recounted the volume of the investments that had gone into the school over the years.
Since the thefts could not be tackled at the time, it forced Child Scholars to suspend such investments.
And so, when we decided to start the projects, it was a no-brainer that the first one we started with was the security house project. We then proceeded to hire two security personnel. One operates during the day and the other at night. Having secured the school, we could then move on to some of the other long-standing needs.
And quite a lot happened during the holiday. We:
- Secured a meter that now supplies electricity within the school.
- Built three additional age-appropriate toilets for the children.
- Rebuilt the scaffolding that holds the water tanks that supply water to the school.
- Completed the flooring project.
- Purchased ceiling and wall fans for the classrooms.
- Replaced all the chairs and tables in the classrooms.
- Changed all the window mosquito nets.
- Purchased a new laptop, drum sets, and other school-related items.
- Purchased writing whiteboards for the classrooms.
- Built partitions in some classrooms and executed other carpentry projects.
When you look at that list, it may seem like a collection of different projects. But when you put everything together, you begin to see what we see: a school that is gradually moving from simply managing its circumstances to having the basic infrastructure and tools it needs to properly support its pupils and teachers.
And we are particularly grateful that we could finally address some of these needs.
Equipping the Teachers for a New School Year
A few weeks before resumption, we also engaged the services of an educational consultant to train our teachers on “Classroom Decoration in the 21st Century.”
It was a three-day practical training that took place at the school from September 7 to 9, 2026, and brought together eight members of the teaching staff. The training was designed to help the teachers understand how to create classroom environments that are not just attractive, but functional, learner-centered, and supportive of better learning outcomes.
The teachers were taken through a number of practical areas, including:
- Understanding the 21st-century classroom: exploring modern approaches to classroom design, visual aesthetics, and creating learning spaces that encourage curiosity without overwhelming learners.
- Classroom borders and display designs: learning how to create neat and visually balanced borders for walls, doors, notice boards, and subject corners, with attention to color harmony, patterns, alignment, and precision.
- Lettering techniques and visual construction: developing skills in measuring, typography, precision cutting, and mounting to create classroom headers, inspirational quotes, and subject-specific signage.
- Creative and sustainable use of materials: learning how everyday, low-cost materials can be transformed into useful and attractive learning aids without incurring unnecessary costs.
- Educational classroom displays and learning corners: creating purposeful spaces such as interactive learning corners, subject hubs, classroom regulations, motivational displays, and areas for showcasing pupils’ work.
And this was not just a sit-down-and-listen kind of training.
The teachers spent a significant part of the program working practically constructing borders, creating custom lettering, developing thematic displays, and producing instructional charts. They also worked on precision, symmetry, presentation, and how to maintain vibrant and supportive learning spaces.
We believe these are the kinds of skills that can make a difference in the everyday learning experience of a child. A classroom can be a powerful teaching tool too, and we want our teachers to have the knowledge and creativity to make the most of the spaces available to them.
What Comes Next at Veritas?
Now that we have switched things up, it is not going to be business as usual at Veritas Academy.
Child Scholars has now fully engaged the services of an educational consultant and teacher who will supervise and coordinate the school’s affairs. This is an important step toward bringing greater structure, accountability, and consistency to the school’s development.
And while we are prioritizing our children, we are not leaving their teachers behind.
We are scheduling professional development seminars to equip them with the right tools for effective classroom management and continued professional growth. The consultant’s recommendations also include regular capacity-building in areas such as innovative pedagogy, classroom management, child psychology, and professional communication.
We have also employed a few more teaching and non-teaching staff as the school has recorded an increase in the number of pupils enrolled for the new session.
This is a new chapter for Veritas Academy. There is still work to be done, but there is also a lot to celebrate.
Thank You for Helping Us Keep Going
When we look at everything that has happened at Veritas, we are reminded that your giving does more than solve an immediate problem. It creates room for us to think ahead, respond to new needs, and make investments that can improve a child’s experience of school.
A new toilet may seem like a simple thing until you realize that children no longer have to manage with just two. A new table and chair may seem ordinary until you remember the classrooms that had to function with old and inadequate furniture. A fan, a whiteboard, a laptop, or a secure school environment may each seem like a small intervention on its own, but together, they begin to change the story.
Thank you for your provisions. They are helping us achieve our collective goal of ensuring that our pupils acquire the essential life skills and foundational knowledge to prepare them for a productive life.
Thank you for continuing to stand with these children.
With gratitude,
Morenike Adams
