Dear Child Scholars Donor,
There is something quietly admirable about generosity that is nonstop. This month, we want to simply acknowledge that your generosity is the fuel that steers our wheels and drives our causes across the globe.
This update is about what your commitment helps us to accomplish.
The Roof We Talked About Last Month
In our March newsletter, we told you we were preparing to repair a leaking, mold-affected roof at a local elementary school on the island of Southern Leyte in the Philippines. We are back with good news!
The school community rallied and raised just over half of the funds needed for the repair. Child Scholars, powered by your donations, covered the rest. The roof is being replaced. The children in that school will no longer sit beneath a ceiling that leaks when it rains or breathe air thick with mold. Learning can now happen under safe conditions, as it always should.
Our Director of the Philippines Project, Kailana Burden, has shared photographs from the ground documenting the roof replacement as they are being carried out.
Term One at Ngala: 25 Students Remain in School By Your Generosity.
Directors Dr. Macahan Moore and Dr. Sara Reed shared the Q1 2026 Activity Report, detailing the progress and findings from our ongoing partnership with Ngala School for the Deaf in Nakuru, Kenya.
Through donor contributions, Child Scholars sponsored 25 students for Term One of 2026. Each of the 25 students received a 50% tuition scholarship. A flex fund was also created to support families facing additional need or special circumstances.
By contributing to the tuition shortfall, the school has been able to channel other resources toward health and academic improvement projects that benefit all learners, not just the 25 sponsored students.
So what does Ngala need in the short, medium, and long term?
Immediate Priorities
- Increase tuition scholarships across primary, junior, and vocational education.
- Regular food supply: contributions to ensure balanced meals for all learners.
- Stationery and vitamin and mineral supplementation for students.
- Continued dorm fumigation and upkeep; play equipment for the youngest learners.
Medium-Term Goals
- Upgrade whiteboards and supply stationery for students and teachers.
- Replace all dorm beds with metal beds as required by the Kenya Public Health Department.
- Expand vocational training capacity: equipment, staff, and materials.
- Convert to LED lighting and explore solar water heating for long-term savings.
- Repair damaged ceilings and complete unfinished painting across the campus.
Long-Term Vision
- Renovate aging buildings and upgrade kitchen ventilation.
- Build a milking shed and food troughs to support livestock and food security.
- Drill a borehole for reliable year-round water access.
- Provide laptops to equip students with basic technology skills for the future.
- Develop an on-site dispensary and procure hearing aids for children with residual hearing.
This is not a one-off fix-it project; it is the kind that requires people who stay.
A Quick Note from Nidus
We recently had a sit-down with Dr. Franklin, the Associate Medical Director at Nidus Aquilae Hospital. No formal report, just a conversation.
He spoke about what it takes to build a system where there was limited resources:
- Making better use of existing equipment.
- Improving internal coordination.
- Expanding what the hospital can actually offer patients.
What stood out was not just the progress; it was the authenticity. They are building with what they have. And stretching it as far as it can go.
