Dear Child Scholars Donor,
Imagine having a dream but being too unwell to pursue it. Or having the ability to learn, create, and contribute to the world, but lacking access to the education that could help you develop that ability.
Often, what stands between a person and their purpose is not a lack of potential. It is an unmet need.
When healthcare is accessible and education is within reach, people have a better opportunity to think clearly, develop their abilities, and pursue the things that matter to them. These two essentials do more than meet immediate needs; they help create the conditions in which people can thrive.
This is why the work of Child Scholars matters so much to us. Through our various initiatives, we continue to address needs that affect people’s well being, learning, and opportunities for the future. And because you continue to give, we can keep showing up where the needs are.
This October, our focus is on Nidus Aquilae Hospital and its progress in the second quarter of 2026. We will also take you back to Veritas Academy, where an encouraging increase in enrollment gives us another reason to celebrate.
Nidus Aquilae Hospital
Healthcare is not only about treating an illness when it occurs. It is also about having the facilities, equipment, people, and systems needed to provide care when someone walks through the hospital doors.
According to the second-quarter activity report from the Associate Medical Director, Dr. Franklin Chiwuzoh, the hospital focused on improving its power supply, progressing the laboratory renovation, increasing awareness of its services, and maintaining the quality of care. There were challenges, but there was also meaningful progress. The report records:
- 18,416 patients registered to date
- 1,257 patient visits
- 50 admissions
- 4 deliveries
- 1,894 laboratory tests
These figures reflect people seeking medical attention, patients needing closer care, families welcoming new members, and individuals relying on laboratory services. Each one is a reason to keep strengthening the hospital’s capacity to serve.
Addressing the Basics, Strengthening Care
One of the quarter’s key achievements was the procurement of a maximum-demand prepaid power meter, made possible by a grant from Dr. Okenye. This is an important step toward resolving the hospital’s electrical energy supply challenges and reducing disruptions to its operations.
The laboratory extension and renovation also progressed. Other operational work included repairing the diesel generator, fumigating the hospital, and maintaining fire extinguishers.
Beyond infrastructure, the hospital invested in its people. A general staff meeting strengthened communication, and clinical staff received supervision and mentoring. The team also held regular case reviews and ward rounds, supervised clinical activities across units, encouraged staff morale, and identified training needs. Community sensitization activities were also carried out to raise awareness of the hospital and its services.
These efforts matter because a hospital’s ability to serve its community depends on more than its building. Reliable power, functional facilities, informed communities, and supported healthcare professionals all shape the quality of care patients receive.
Moving Forward
The hospital still faces challenges: attracting more fee-paying patients and retainerships, delayed payments from Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), and the absence of a sonographer since the previous staff member left. The third-quarter priorities are therefore:
- Complete the laboratory renovation and extension.
- Recruit a community engagement officer to raise awareness of the hospital and attract more clients.
- Employ another sonographer to fill the staffing gap.
- Install additional signage and banners at strategic locations to improve visibility.
- Continue reviewing hospital tariffs in response to current economic realities.
- Engage HMO managers to improve the timeliness of claims payments.
We look forward to seeing these steps advance as the hospital continues to meet the needs of its patients.
Then Came the Children at Veritas Academy
Last month, we shared updates on the renovation and structural improvements at Veritas Academy. This month, we have another development, and we think you will be just as excited as we are.
In the school year that ended in July 2026, Veritas Academy had 75 learners. For the 2026/2027 school year, enrollment has risen to 115 learners!
That is 40 more learners than last year, an increase of approximately 53%. The new enrollment comprises 55 boys and 60 girls, according to the school’s enrollment records.
We are encouraged to see this growth while the school continues to undergo renovation and adjustments to its administrative activities. Improving a school is not only about making buildings more functional or classrooms more comfortable. It is also about creating an environment in which parents have greater confidence in the learning experience their children receive.
This is where your generosity has played a major part. You have helped make these improvements possible, and every step toward a better learning environment helps the children of Veritas Academy gain the essential life skills and foundational knowledge they need for a productive life.
Thank you!
As we close this month’s edition, we want to recognize the directors of our initiatives across the globe. They are the heart of Child Scholars. Behind every milestone we celebrate and every challenge we work through are people who give their time, energy, and commitment, many without financial compensation, because they believe in the communities we serve. We cannot thank them enough.
And to you, our donors: thank you for standing with us and making it possible for these initiatives to continue to thrive.
At the hospital, the work of improving healthcare continues. At Veritas Academy, more children are finding their way into the classroom. These are different milestones, but they point toward the same goal: helping people access the support they need to live, learn, grow, and pursue their purpose.
If you have questions about any of these updates, simply reply to this email. We would love to hear from you.
With gratitude,
