Ngala School for the Deaf
Summary of Ngala School for the Deaf (ECE, Primary, JSS & Vocational) – 2025
Ngala School for the Deaf is a public mixed day and boarding school in Bondeni, Nakuru City (Rift Valley region), serving children with hearing impairments. The school comprises four main sections—Early Childhood Education (ECE), Primary School (Grades 1–6), Junior Secondary School (Grades 7–9), and a Vocational Training section for learners who do not proceed to secondary school. There is also a separate secondary school for the deaf nearby. Ngala School has fully adopted Kenya’s new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Currently, the total student enrollment is 202 (101 boys and 101 girls), with a teaching faculty of 22 (4 male, 18 female) and 10 non-teaching staff. A significant majority of students are boarders, often from low-income or vulnerable backgrounds, which impacts the school’s finances and necessitates external support. Government funds and parent contributions are supposed to cover expenses; however, there remains a deficit of approximately 21,000 KES per pupil annually. Many parents are unable to afford the tuition. Fee collection rates hover at about 60%, creating a funding shortfall that compromises the school’s boarding operations and the capacity to provide adequate resources.
Water resources are limited. The school has substantial rainwater collection and storage in situ as well as access to municipal water, however municipal water is rationed during the dry season only available 14 hours per day and comes at a steep financial cost. Given communal housing, the necessity for high hygiene standards at the school maintains steady utilization of water year round. Ideally the garden should be irrigated during the dry season and the herd size would be increased to 6 or more cows to ensure year round milk needs are met; however, both activities are currently restricted by the limited water resources.
Despite these challenges, Ngala School maintains a strong retention policy to ensure that “no child is left behind,” working closely with parents to keep learners enrolled. The school also facilitates smooth transitions by registering pupils for national exams without performance barriers.

Ways to Support our Cause
During a recent visit by representatives of Child Scholars, meetings were held with the acting head teacher, accountant, teachers, and caregivers. They highlighted critical classroom needs—whiteboards, stationery, laptops for both teaching and student computer skills, and improved sanitation (e.g., fumigation, hot water for bathing for the young children). Infrastructure concerns include damaged ceilings, half-finished painting, and lack of a functioning dispensary. Child Scholars provided some immediate assistance in the form of supplies (foodstuffs, sports and ECE materials, utensils) and coordinated dorm fumigation. However, the school continues to rely on outside support—financial, material, and otherwise—to fulfill its mission of educating learners with hearing impairments in a safe, inclusive environment. The schools policy of not turning a child away even when not collecting tuition is unquestionably the right decision but continues to propagate a budget deficit which has resulted in a situation where the school must prioritize short term needs while deferring maintenance and long term strategic actions. With the appropriate support to Ngala School, there is significant opportunity to ensure these children have access to the specialized education that they need as well as improving the schools ability to provide that education.
